About this deal

Three of my six brothers were there, Conor whistling some old tune; Cormack, who was his twin, creeping up behind to slip a handful of bog weed down his neck.

When she is kidnapped by enemy forces and taken to a foreign land, it seems that there will be no way for her to break the spell that condemns all that she loves. What is more surprising, is just how Marillier managed to expand the fairy tale while staying comparatively true to it. Clodagh's twin is being wed to a young nobleman, and Sevenwaters is filled with visitors, including the handsome Aidan, and his best friend and foster-brother, Cathal ( Ka-hall), both young men in her cousin's retinue. To access your ebook(s) after purchasing, you can download the free Glose app or read instantly on your browser by logging into Glose. First published in 1999, Daughter of the Forest is loosely based on the traditional story of The Six Swans, which appears in Grimm’s Fairy Tales and has been re-told in many versions, including one by Hans Christian Andersen. I also don’t know much about the Celts and Britons to be honest I feel like I should be better read about such things. These I devoured in my thirst for knowledge and thought it nothing unusual, for this was the only world I had known.

Still, I found the last third of the book captured my attention without me even realising, and before I knew it I had become invested in Sorcha’s story, more than I anticipated. But he would watch the boys practicing with sword or staff or throwing axe as they galloped and wheeled on horseback. I’ve read quite a few fairytale retellings and I think so far this has got to be one of the most hard hitting in that respect. To make matters worse, her father doesn't know whom to trust anymore, as the mysterious Cathal also disappeared at the same time as the baby.Despite an at times slow pace, a slightly two drawn out ending and somewhat overly formal dialogue, Daughter of the Forest is nothing short of fantastic!

This does not matter in moments of beauty or extremis, but is a little trying when the steaks are less pressing. Additionally make sure your User-Agent is not empty and is something unique and descriptive and try again. A pretty hefty fantasy book set in an old historical setting, the world politics itself can be enough of an undertaking.Sorcha goes through the wringer, and it’s painful, but perseveres come-hell or -high water, and she gets her bit of happiness at the end. To add to this problem, while the book is told entirely in first person from Sorcha’s perspective, the book’s dialogue is written in formal, declarative speech which takes a bit of getting used to, and often feels needlessly long winded, albeit for the most part the character’s personalities show through all the same. Also, Lady Oonagh literally does a bunk before the conclusion, and though my lady informs me she comes into the trilogy later, this still felt like a bit of a let-down. Yet, it is a story whose very premise becomes more horrific the more you think about it, especially to anyone who's ever grabbed a handful of nettles.

She also introduces a secondary story in the character of Simon, a young English soldier her family captures and tortures. While hiding in the forest, she is brutally raped, which drives a wedge between herself and Red when they first meet and as they slowly fall in love. Their lives change when, together, they must embark upon a journey of self-discovery that will lead them far away and closer to each other. With the exception of Conor perhaps, who seems to keep some of his own mind when he becomes a swan (because how else would we learn what was going on back home? I did not know that other girls of twelve were learning to do fine embroidery, and to plait one another’s hair into intricate coronets, and to dance and sing. And while that’s not necessarily a bad thing, the sheer length of the chapters was enough to demotivate.
