About this deal

Now Sarah's body has been found by some hunters in the mountains with fresh evidence that has Tracy asking for Edmund's conviction to be appealed.

While working a case she receives notice that two hunters have found the remains of a body in the hills above her hometown, Cedar Grove.

When Sarah’s remains are finally discovered near their hometown in the northern Cascade mountains of Washington State, Tracy is determined to get the answers she’s been seeking. Reading this terrific story reminded me of those school days as on one level this is a relatively straightforward story about a police investigation into a cold case and the courtroom drama that follows. They had been competing in the finals of a shooting competition and afterwards Tracy went out to dinner with her boyfriend Ben leaving eighteen year old Sarah to drive her car home alone. One, from the beginning, Dugoni intersperses chapters where old Cascade County townsfolk are conspiring to cover up the murder. Bryan Hallett You're right, electricity is generally considered to be a topic studied in Physics, not Chemistry.

I suspect the author included the chapter because he felt reasonably secure in his knowledge of the subject and hoped his readers would too. Tracy is a detective, she decided this when her sister Sarah disappeared 20 years ago and there was never any closure for Tracy. The cliche where a dumb blonde goes into a dark evil place and the audience is yelling "No, No, don't go in there". There were multiple points here that had my eyes misting and texting my own sister how much I love her. He is the recipient of the Nancy Pearl Book Award for fiction and has twice won the Friends of Mystery Spotted Owl Award for best novel. The characters could have been developed more as they were all a bit lifeless, I found Tracy’s character very one dimensional.

I liked Tracy's determination to do what she felt was right, her loyalty to her friends and colleagues, and her strength. Dugoni does a superior job of positioning [the plot elements] for maximum impact, especially in a climactic scene set in an abandoned mine during a blizzard which is melodramatic but nevertheless effective. Seattle Detective Tracy Crosswhite chose law enforcement as a career because of what happened to her younger sister, Sarah, twenty years ago. A murder mystery with, at its heart, a kidnapping and murder thought solved 20 years earlier, but which had forever changed the small town where it had taken place.

For another, the job she turns out to have been hired for—leading an investigation her new boss doesn’t feel he can entrust to his own force—makes her queasy. It would have been far better if she was just helped out by an honourable old mate than by someone who was obviously trying to get her into bed.

It is an important part of the plot toward the end of the book, and it reinforced how much the sisters cared for each other.

I can’t say more than that, but it was a sticky situation and perhaps a moral dilemma that could provoke some heated debate. I think this book dabbled in many sub-genres of crime fiction adding a dab of legal thriller, a smidgen of psychological thriller, a slice of whodunit mystery and a sprinkle of suspense, blending them all together to create a top notch thriller.
