About this deal

AKG's premium, wireless and noise-cancelling headphones are solid performers. Hinged for portability, they deliver effortless timing and a healthy dose of musicality, making them an easy, elegant listen. Battery life is 23 hours with Bluetooth and noise cancelling on, rising to 36 hours if you switch to a wired connection. And because the cable's permanently attached, ruining the cable will ruin the headphones as well. This is made more frustrating by the fact that AKG sells other headphones at a similar price that includes a removable (though non-standard) cable.

The headphones are so evenly balanced that we could listen to them for hours without ever getting tired. There are no bright edges or booming basslines. Soundwise there are no really big differences between the siblings. All of them have a V-signature, where the mids fall a bit behind and are absorbed by the emphasized but not unpleasant highs (at least on the K52). The bass is not the most solid, but it brings fun into the music. Because the bass of the K52 tends to drop towards the mids and the highs are earlier and more linear, the K52 sounds tidier and more balanced than the big ones. Designed to meet the stringent requirements of recording musicians, producers and engineers on a budget, the AKG K52 delivers legendary AKG sound quality with exceptional comfort. This exceptional level of audio isolation is due to a new acoustic chamber, which sits between the ear cup and the hinge that connects to the headband. Our innovative design gives you the freedom to move your head in any direction, without letting sound in or out. With the K52, you’ll enjoy a private workspace, no matter where you choose to create. The AKG Y50s aren’t an exact comparison, but if you’re curious: the K52s are a bigger, clearer sound with a more articulate presentation. We’ve yet to review the AKG K52s pricier siblings, the K72 and K92, so with only a tenner between the three pairs in this range, we can’t crown the K52s as the best value-for-money headphones bar none just yet. But they’re sure to come pretty close. The headband is self-adjusting and therefore adapts to the shape of the head. Even large skulls should not have any problems with the AKG K72. The wearing comfort on the head is therefore good, even if the headband does not offer any significant additional padding.

The highs climb their peak from 3 kHz on quite late and keep the level (like the K52) up to around 7 kHz, but with a more pronounced drop around 5 kHz, where the K52 is more linear. Especially the slightly increased energy around 6 kHz makes the K72 a bit more sharp than the K52, which seems more balanced in the high frequencies. This is supposed to simulate more details, but for me this is rather a disadvantage, because sibilants and sharpness come out more, even if only subtly. Again, I wonder what the intention of the "improvement" was. These hugely impressive wired headphones are six-time What Hi-Fi? Award winners. Excelling in sound and style, they're blessed with aluminium ear cups, soft leather ear pads and dynamic sound on a grand scale. Thrilling levels of detail and near-flawless balance would be enough to set them apart from the competition. But factor in the affordable price, not to mention the portable design, and the Y50 are true show stoppers. These headphones are great for the price they are extremely comfortable and produce a nicely balanced over all sound. They are not Bass heavy so are ideal for recording at home or just listening to music through your computer without giving you a sweaty head or sore ears. K52 is built to last, with a lightweight but tough construction, high-quality components, and replaceable earpads. They have a pleasant, open sound that blends nicely with a variety of genres. If you're a basshead, however, the K52 isn't the headset for you. It is incredibly light (just 200 grams), making even long listening sessions a breeze. The K52 sits extremely comfortably on your ears, thanks to the self-adjusting headband and velvety earpads, and the level of isolation is more than acceptable. The K52 excels in capturing the subtleties of vocal and instrumental performances, with a well-defined bass end that provides a firm foundation for a clear sound. Because of its low impedance, it can be readily controlled by cellphones or digital music players.

Why is AKG K52 better than AKG K72?

If you know you’ll be wearing the headphones indoors more than out, and are on a strict budget, the AKG K52s are one of the easiest recommendations we’ve made. The 20-hour battery life is very respectable, but you can use them with a wire when they run out of juice. Intuitive ear cup controls are the cherry on an attractively-priced cake. All in all, these are high-quality cord-cutters. With the K52, I've already said a lot because of the almost outrageous tonal similarities, so I'll be a bit shorter here.

It remains questionable, however, why AKG was of the opinion to bring three models onto the market, which differ so slightly. But this is not really different with their K7 series. In any case, the K72 & K92 do not represent any added value for me compared to the K52. If you appreciate life's simple pleasures, you'll be won over by the pared-down K52: comfortable, budget headphones don't get much better. Given the price, they're fantastically constructed and surprisingly expensive-looking. We have all had that pair of headphones that just never sits right on your head. The band is either too large or two small and never finds that right place that just hugs your head properly. That is why AKG came up with this self adjusting headband that fits itselves to your head instantly. No more adjusting as you change cans between band members. Here's what AKG say about the K52 Studio Headphones: This headset has an attractive, yet simple, appearance that is also fairly robust. This headset is comprised of a metal and plastic mix. Steel is used for the headband, while plastic is used for the earcups. When it comes to nailing the correct grip, it can involve following the same part for hours at a time - and that's where comfort comes into play. This headphone features a one-of-a-kind self-adjusting headband that automatically adjusts to the optimal fit for each band member. There's no need to worry with sensitive sizing systems that could fail over time. The K72 is a K52 in the end, except that the bass loses a minimal amount of level and the lower mids gain. In the high frequencies, a pinch around 6 kHz is added, which is supposed to simulate a higher resolution. Compared to the K52, this doesn't convince me and rather goes in a more negative direction. We have state-of-the-art testing facilities in London, Reading and Bath, where our team of experienced, in-house reviewers test the majority of hi-fi and AV kit that passes through our door.AKG is known for making professional-grade gear that can stand the test of time, and the K52 headphones are no exception. We put them through extreme testing and abuse to ensure they'll handle anything you throw at them: Our regimen of drop-tests simulates exaggerated falls. 80,000 cable bend cycles at both end points ensure the cable won't break or underperform. And intensive driver testing - a prolonged series of 3W bursts each half second - means that the drivers won't fail when you really need them. We are always impartial and do our best to make sure we're hearing every product at their very best, so we'll try plenty of different types of music and give them plenty of listening time (and time to run in), while the wired headphones that might warrant being used with a DAC are tested with a suitable one. It's not just about sound quality, of course. If a pair has active noise cancellation – increasingly the case these days – we'll ensure part of our testing involves using them in different environments. A unique acoustic chamber sits between the ear cup and the hinge that attaches to the headband, providing superb audio isolation. The AKG unique design allows you to rotate your head in any direction without allowing sound to leak in or out. No matter where you produce, you'll have a private workspace with the K52. The rhythm is agile and full of energy. There could be more to the way the K52s handles dynamics, but it’s enjoyable enough.
